I feel dirty...

Yes I just finished installing Visual Studio 2008 on Snow Leopard so I can do .NET development on a Mac.

I will never be clean.

Snow Leopard + Parallels + XP Pro + Visual Studio 2008

I ran into one little problem getting Snow Leopard, Parallels, Windows XP Pro, and Visual Studio 2008 to play nice together.

Here is the error message I kept getting when trying to import an existing project into VS 2008:

project location is not trusted

Solutions I found:

1. social.microsoft.com
2. msdn.microsoft.com
3. blogs.imeta.co.uk

Notes:

Run this from the Visual Studio 2008 command line tool:

C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\[some version of .Net Framework]\casp ol.exe -m -ag 1.5 -url file://\\.psf/* FullTrust

Create a dedicated share in Parallels for your VS 2008 project folder.

Connect 360

Nullriver Software has built a killer utility for the Mac that allows you to stream your media content (Movies, Pictures, TV Shows, etc…) to your XBox 360.

It’s worth the $20 for the music streaming alone.

The Nautilus Needs An Upgrade

The following picture is a working Mac Mini computer with mechanical keyboard and Victorian style monitor complete with a tube amp style power supply.

This would be perfect for blogging while traveling undersea in the ol’ Nautilus.

How I Rip My DVDs To iPod Video

Software

  1. Mac the Ripper
  2. Media Fork
  3. There is no step three

Break the CSS encryption

This is the questionably legal part. I use Mac the Ripper to break the encryption so I can queue my conversions to iPod format overnight. The best example I can think of is an TV show DVD with multiple chapters and discs.

The instructions for ripping the DVD to your harddrive are available here: Mac the Ripper

Convert to iPod

Here is the machine time consuming part. Depending on which Mac you have it could take up to 5 hours to reencode a full length movie. For those lucky few with an Intel Mac it may only take 30 minutes.

Media Fork Settings

These are the settings I have had success with. YMMV.

  • File format: MP4 file
  • Codecs: MPEG-4 Video / AAC Audio
  • Framerate: Same as source
  • Encoder: FFmpeg
  • Average Bitrate: 1000
  • 2-pass encoding: checked
  • Keep AR: On
  • Deinterlace: On
  • Anamorphic: Off
  • Output: 640×480 (max video resolution the 5G iPod Video supports)

Queue

After you complete the settings portion you can check the ‘Enable queue’ button and add the conversion job to the queue. Now you are free to go back and select a different title or DVD. Rinse and repeat as necessary.

Nike Plus

I bought the last Nike+ Sport Kit from the Bellevue Apple Store yesterday and this little device is amazing. $39 for a device that will work with any pair of shoes. I did lose it on my first outing, but I plan on using the velcro hack that podophile has posted in order to secure it.

The accuracy is very solid. I mapped my run with Google Pedometer. and it was within a tenth of a mile.

You can buy it online at Amazon or Apple .
