Rivers of a Lost Coast
At the turn of the 20th Century, a handful of pioneers carried their fly rods into California’s remote north coast and gave birth to a culture that would revolutionize their sport. For a select few, steelhead fly fishing became an obsessive pursuit without compromise.
Leading the pack was the mythical, Bill Schaadt, an off-kilter angler famous for his ruthless pursuit to be ‘in the fish’. The new endeavor was ruled by a demanding, unspoken code, which made ‘breaking in’ almost as difficult as ‘breaking out’.
By the early 1980s, the Golden State’s coastal fisheries found themselves caught in a spiraling decline. As California searched for its disappearing salmon and steelhead, these men foraged for their souls.

Fishing Round Lake
For my birthday (May 31st) we spent the morning fishing Round Lake. It was a slow day fishing for trout on Mepp’s spinners, but we all had fun. Logan and I landed two small trout.
Hit the snapshot for more pictures.
Round Lake is located in a 142 acre state park about an hour north of Coeur d’Alene. Google Map Link

Rocky Ford Creek 2009 Photos
The trip was a screaming success this year. Everyone caught multiple fish, with Frazier leading the pack landing more than 21 trout. Kevin and I dominated the shuffle board table with six consecutive wins, and very little competition. Our two Rocky Ford Creek virgins (Michael and Keith) both landed some impressive Oncorhynchus mykiss.
Fantastic trip and a great start to the 2009 fly fishing season. Enjoy the snapshots. Click on Frazier’s Trout below to see them all (143)

Mag Bow-mount Trolling Motor
First I ‘fabricated’ a custom fit motor deck out of 3/4” exterior treated Fir plywood. Then I mounted the deck with stainless steel hardware. Next I gave it a nice coat of marsh-grass green, finally a few hours later I mounted the motor with more stainless hardware.
I didn’t have the right coupling for the battery, so I can’t say if it works yet.
Project Outline:
- 3/4” Plywood (free from previous project)
- Marsh-grass paint (free from previous project)
- Used bow-mount trolling motor ($40 from craigslist)
- Stainless steel hardware ($33 from Lowes)
Fun afternoon project, and a great improvement to the Duck Slayer 1K.

Best Mates
With a minimal amount of effort the five of us could be floating the same stretch of river next summer. The only difference being the amount of water displaced.
This snap was taken around the summer of 1998 I think.

2008 Thompson Falls Fishing
Apologies for the late post everyone, but I finally got around to uploading all of my pics. Big group this year, but for some reason I can’t remember anything that happened on this years trip. And I don’t want any reminders…
