Duck Slayer 1K June 25th 2008

I prepared myself for a marathon event of trying to pull start an old 2-stroke motor that had not been ran in over two years. She started and purred for me after three pulls.

  • Fresh gas
  • Rich mixture 25:1
  • Properly gapped spark plugs

All account for an easy starting (sorta) 1975 Johnson SeaKing.

As you can see I’ve spent several hours removing 30+ years of improvements to this old boat. I started out just trying to tighten up and repair small problems, but I quickly found more and more problems and before I knew it I was half way through removing everything mostly due to rotting wood.

The good news is that this boat is roughly 250lbs lighter than it was when I bought it.

I plan on tackling the plywood motor mount plates next. I found significant dry-rot in places and some very squishy wood as well. After that I will scrap, wire brush, sand, and spray a new coat of primer followed by a lovely matte olive drab top coat.
