Thoughts on BMI
Since starting my weight loss project. I’ve had several interesting conversations with friends and co-workers about BMI and how it is not a suitable measure for all people. I did some cough research cough using Google and Wikipedia, and there are three distinct groups of people who should not use BMI to evaluate their overall health and fitness: athletes, seniors, or children.
I’m not an athlete, senior, or child. I haven’t found anything online to indicate that I shouldn’t use BMI. I have a medium build and a relatively sedentary lifestyle.
Wikipedia BMI Quote:
BMI categories are regularly regarded as a satisfactory tool for measuring whether sedentary individuals are “underweight,” “overweight” or “obese”
Ideal BMI
Since I can’t make myself taller, I guess I will have to reduce my weight. I’m using this chart from the NHLBI to dial in my ideal weight. I have another 20 lbs to lose. Yeeesh!
